Making History at the Women's All Stars Carnival
On the 5th and 6th of October, the Vico Oval on Gimuy Walubara Yindji (Cairns) country was alive with support, love and Indigenous women’s rugby league. Hosted by Erub United, the Women’s All-Star Carnival was one for the history books as the event was the first-ever Indigenous Women’s Rugby League Carnival.
With plans for the carnival being in the works for over two years, Tagai Management Consultants, a key Erub United sponsor partner, committed to be the Carnival platinum sponsor to assist in making the Women’s All-Star Carnival a reality.
TMC Managing Director, Murray Saylor shared with Erub United Chair Elia Ware, “Tagai Management Consultants is grounded in our Erubian roots and a village is not built by one person and organisation. All of us who want to create change and impact, standing side by side is powerful. Respects to all pamle (family), supporters, players and other sponsors.”
Ten deadly teams nominated to play for this historical occasion, with the chance of winning a cash prize of $20,000. The playing teams were Bine Nie, the Dhurrbil Orchids, the Black Cockatoos, Erub United, Ugul Malu, the Cape Sisters, the Original Doobs, Miakal Kuzi, the Normanton Stingers, and the Coastal Neurs.
All players were fierce, and each game was a never-ending torrent of power, skill, and determination. It was amazing to see so many people come to watch, cheer, and support these incredible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters.
The weekend ended with the grand final match between the Original Doobs and the Coastal Neurs. After some sensational playing from both teams, the winning team of the inaugural Women’s All-Star Carnival were the Coastal Neurs.
The TMC team congratulates the Coastal Neurs, but we also would like to congratulate all the teams that played during the weekend. At the end of the day, everyone wins, as this is a massive milestone for not only Indigenous Rugby League but Indigenous women’s sports.
Thank you to the other sponsors and carnival partners for providing assistance with the event - Indigenous Employment, Grass Roots Advisory Services, Aggreko Australia, Fahlstrom Scaffolding and the Cairns Kangaroos.
Thank you to Triple SSS Footy Show for livestreaming and commentating all games during the weekend.
Thank you, E.U. Clothing, for providing the deadly uniforms for all the teams. Thank you to all the stall holders and their wonderful wares and catering: Bracks Indigenous Clothing, Cairns Kangaroo Jnr Rugby League, J Indigenous Designs, Ned’s Local Produce, and Ilan Charm Jewellery.
Lastly, thank you again to everyone who attended the carnival to watch some deadly women’s sports and support our female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rugby league players.
Tagai Management Consultants wishes for the continual success of the Women’s All-Star Carnival and hopes to see it grow into an annual event that Australians, Indigenous and Non-Indigenous, want to support, attend and come together.
