Erub Kerker Seasonal Calendar

Last month, Erub Kerker was added to the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website, the 18th and most recent addition.

This seasonal calendar recognises the traditional ancestral knowledge of Erubam Le (Darnley people) from Erub Island in the northeastern Torres Strait, and has four main seasons;

  • Koki (wet season)

  • Sager Kerker (south-easterly wind dry season)

  • Ziai (short and variable season that is part of the transition from Sager into Naiger)

  • Naiger (hot dry season).

When the seasons change from one to another, this is referred to as Bamu (winds 'fighting' each other or changing) until the next season fully sets in.

The meteorological view of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is one of great diversity and resourceful knowledge, having developed an intricate understanding of the environment over many thousands of years.

Erub Kerker was created under the guidance of their Elders and community members, with assistance from Erubam Rangers and the Torres Strait Regional Authority's Traditional Ecological Knowledge team. Approval to display this calendar has been provided by the Erubam PBC, who own the copyright for it.

Learn more about the website and the Bureau of Meteorology's commitment to strengthening respectful and collaborative relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by visiting the Indigenous Weather Knowledge (IWK) website.
